Wild Card, an all-new contemporary STANDALONE by New York Times Bestselling author Karina Halle is available NOW!!!
Wild Card is a standalone novel and the first book in the North Ridge Trilogy about rough and rugged Canadian mountain men, the Nelson brothers. Canada’s never felt so hot.
She swore she’d never go back home.
She swore she’d never see the man who broke her all those years ago.
But you don’t always get to choose your path.
And sometimes that path is as wild and rugged as the heart.
Rachel Waters thought she saw the last of the small mountain town of North Ridge, British Columbia, when she left six years ago. But while her advertising career blossomed beneath the skyscrapers of Toronto, her mother’s sudden illness has the 26-year old returning to North Ridge to care for her, putting her career on hold while dealing with family secrets, regrets and unresolved goodbyes.
Shane Nelson has always been a bit of a wild card. The youngest of three brothers, Shane’s spent most of his life being underestimated and misunderstood. With his quiet intensity, classic good looks and thoughtful demeanor, he’s an enigma on horseback, managing his father’s sprawling ranch on the slopes of North Ridge.
But while Shane remains the quintessential brooding cowboy, complete with an arsenal of inner demons, all of that changes when Rachel steps back into his life.
She was the girl he pushed away.
Now she’s the girl who wishes she could leave.
Despite the odds, Shane will do everything to convince Rachel he needs a second chance that he doesn’t deserve but when the two of them head off into the wilderness together in search of lost cattle, more than just their hearts are at stake.
Whether it’s love or lives on the line, one thing is for sure: always bet on the wild card.
Wild Card is a beautiful second chance romance with a little angst, a lot of love and an abundance of secrets lurking beneath the surface in this small town love story. With very little effort I fell for Shane, a humble, hardworking rancher with a good heart. A heart still wrecked over pushing away his first and only love. Even if he his reasons for doing so were pure and out of love. Fast forward six years, Shane’s first love, Rachel is back in town. Rachel never planned on returning to town she grew up in but with her mother’s cancer diagnosis she returns for a few weeks to be by her mother’s side. I wish I could say I felt Rachel’s pain. Pain over a childhood one should never have to endure, pain over the loss of family and a love engrained so deeply it could never be erased. But I couldn’t. I consistently tried to empathise with Rachel and as a loyal fan of Karina Halle’s work, it disappointed me that I couldn’t connect well with this character. While Shane’s heartache all but jumped off the pages in front of me I can’t say the same for Rachel’s. This ultimately led me to grow frustrated with Rachel at times. Despite not loving Rachel, I found myself smiling and gushing over many of the secondary characters as well of course, Shane. Shane and his brothers were the highlight of the book for me so needless to say, I’m extremely keen for more from Fox and Maverick. Wild Card does contain past and present scenes that I personally, wasn’t a massive fan of. While I enjoyed getting to see some snippets of Shane and Rachel in the past, I felt some of the scenes weren’t vital to the story’s progression so more often than not I was bored during those flashbacks. While I enjoyed Wild Card for it’s characters, the light angst and emotional turmoil, I found it quite slow to get into. I personally felt that the constant detailed scene setting could have been dialled which would have helped the story to progress a lot faster in the first half of the book. And the same with the excessive inner monologue from Shane and Rachel in those early chapters, which at times felt unnecessary with details and feelings we were already aware of. Wild Card may not be at the top of my ‘Top Karina Halle Reads’ but it is still a heart-warming, swoon worthy second chance romance between two people who were just meant to be together. A love that stands the test of time.
